30 from Chilkalguda railway colonies sick on drinking polluted

Over 30 persons from Railway colonies in Chilkalguda area here fell ill apparently after consumption of contaminated drinking water even as South Central Railway General Manager Ravindra Gupta today ordered an inquiry into the matter. Gupta ordered an inquiry to ascertain the reasons for the cases reported at Central Railway Hospital, Lallaguda and Secunderabad concerning Gastro-enteritis presumably due to consumption of contaminated water in Railway quarters area Chilkalguda and Secunderabad, an SCR release said. An inquiry committee consisting of Chief Health Director and Chief Engineer (Works), SCR has been constituted to investigate the reasons for the incident. The General Manager also instructed the Chief Medical Director, SCR that all needed Medical attention be rendered to the patients, so as to ensure their speedy recovery, it said. Cases were reported at the Medical Health Unit, Chilkalguda and Central Railway Hospital, Lallaguda yesterday and today of residents from the Railway colonies of Chilkalguda who fell sick due to Gastro-enteritis, presumably on account of consumption of contaminated drinking water. Acting on the same, the patients were rendered necessary medical attention for safe recovery. A total of 28 patients are in admission at Railway Hospital, Lallaguda at present and 8 are taking treatment at referral hospitals. The condition all the patients is stable and safe. Gupta instructed the Divisional Railway Manager, Hyderabad Division to depute staff from Health department for a door to door visit of the Railway quarters at Chilkalguda to advise the residents on the precautions to be taken such as boiling of drinking water before consumption, maintaining adequate sanitation in the Railway colonies etc. The GM also directed that the cleaning of water tanks be taken up on schedule and a thorough check be undertaken of the water pipelines in the area. He also issued instructions to all the Divisions on SCR for undertaking precautionary measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents at other places, SCR Chief Public Relations Officer M UmaShankar Kumar said in a release.
